Opened in 1990, Sakura brought
the true flavor of Japanese dining to Flagstaff Arizona.
In a town known for it’s fast food restaurants
and “steak and potato” places, Sakura was
a daring experiment by owners. As another Flagstaff
restaurant owner, Tony Constantino said in Mountain
Living Magazine: “Ten years ago, when Sakura first
came in, it was like ‘Whoa, a sushi restaurant
in Flagstaff? There not going to make it. Who’s
going to eat Sushi in Flagstaff?’ Now Sakura ranks
as one of the top restaurants in not only Flagstaff,
but also the entire southwest.
For part of Flagstaff, it did take
a while for Sushi to catch their eye and their palate.
Flagstaff though was uniquely situated to introduce
the cuisine to the rest of Northern Arizona. Flagstaff
sits at the intersection of Interstates 40 and 17. The
restaurant itself is on the famed Route 66. As the gateway
to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff draws numerous international
and domestic visitors to the city. The city is also
a regional government, medical and education center.
A buzz soon started about the restaurant
that still exists today. Guests are attracted to the
restaurant due to its authentic ambience, great food
and attentive service. Sakura is a great place to hold
a special event such as a birthday or anniversary party.
Large parties love to come and enjoy the “eatertainment”
provided by Chefs juggling salt and pepper shakers,
shrimp tails and the ring of fire.
Sakura is a place dedicated not
to only show, but to substance. To maintain quality,
Sakura has fish delivered fresh, flown into Phoenix
and delivered by truck that day to the restaurant. The
Teppan Chefs cut and trim all the meat used on their
tables. Hours of training go into creating the Teppan
shows and artistic Sushi dishes. Executive Teppan Chef,
Mike Burris has been at the hotel almost since it has
opened. He takes personal pride in the food quality
and the show.
If you are ready to try a dinning
experience unmatched in Northern Arizona, try Sakura.
